…honesty in memoir-writing… a double-edged sword…

…as a writer, I love paradox… the creative balance… peak and trough… princes and paupers… sweet and sour… I shamelessly strive for emotive expression in my novels… breathing feelings into what happens to my characters… Lawd knows, they cause me enough angst when I write about them… therefore, it should have come as no surprise to me when I embarked on the ambitious project of writing my own biography… the twin imposters of delight and melancholy currently visit with great regularity as the chapters of my life unfold on my laptop… from the outset, I decided it would not be an ego trip, cataloguing whatever achievements may have been my lot, but to attempt to balance the tome with as much gut honesty as I can muster… that’s where the pain resides… it has been remarkable how the distance of time has removed some of the jagged edges of some events I’d rather not have had happen… and equally to recognise that success is also a relative concept, which lessens with the passage of the years …

…what is confirmed for me in the writing of the biography, is that every moment, every event, good, bad and indifferent, was necessary to bring me to this moment in my existence… and I am grateful for each second of it… I’m the only person who sleeps in my head each night… the ‘no bullshit’ zone… these days, I kinda like the guy who stares back at me from the shaving mirror every morning… it wasn’t always that way… time, tolerance and acceptance of many things come with the passage of time… some will call that experience… I treat it as a continuous learning curve…

…I’m not truly conscious of ‘why’ I wanted to get the memoir written, and now it doesn’t matter… I am so pleased that I’m following through with it… honesty in memoir-writing… a double-edged sword… the title I’ve chosen, – STRANGELY, I’M STILL HERE – AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY – may give a wee insight into the contents… target date for completion and uploading to Auntie Amazon Kindle is within the next four to six weeks, but I have a strong urge to get it finished as soon as possible, so that launch date may be brought forward… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!

…as a self-publishing author, you have to work your asterisk off in the social networks…

…just over ten years ago, this ol’ Scots Jurassic scribbler finished writing The Violin Man’s Legacy, my first Jack Calder crime thriller… frankly, I wrote it just to see if I could actually produce a book all on my own… then the scribbling addiction took over… now, a decade later, there are five Jack Calder titles on Auntie Amazon Kindle, with a sixth as Work-In-Progress… 100,000+ downloads of the eBooks makes all of my books bestsellers by the industry’s definition… along the way, there has also been a series of collections of my blog posts, a book of poetry, half a dozen ghostwriting assignments for autobiographies, two corporate commemorative anniversary books and nearly 1,800 blog posts… one of the most frequent questions I get asked from wannabe and existing fellow-authors is ‘How do you get your books out there?’… it’s a sum’times gruelling, but necessary part of a modern writer’s life that the bulk of the marketing and promotional activity has to come from the writer himself or herself… I learned early on that the virtual universe was the place to be… the social networks in all their glory and dread… a few years ago, I was invited to the Dubai Festival of Literature to speak on two platforms… one as a self-publishing author, and the other as a supposed social networking guru… let me disavow that latter notion… I am still learning that stuff… however, I did share with a room packed full of authors at the Festival how I used a handful of the social channels to propagate my books… thereafter I was persuaded to write a short guide on how I was doing it, SELF-PUBLISHING STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL SALES, which is also on Kindle… the long and short of it is that ‘building the platform’ (of followers) is so vital to the business of writing, that I implore any and all of you who are seeking to enjoy a reasonable uptake for your literary babies, start now, and work on it regularly… be a pal on the networks… help other  authors by sharing about their work on Twitter and Facebook, and any other channels of your choice… as a self-publishing author, you have to work your asterisk off in the social networks… it is hard work, but well worth it… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!

…a Writer’s work is never done… thankfully!…

…a wee sneak at Master Gallacher’s current writing projects will reveal the following W.I.P.s:

1. Three ghostwriting engagements, viz:-

a. One 90% complete

b. One 50% complete

c. One 40% complete

2. One Jack Calder crime thriller in process – 60% complete

3. One entire suite of manuals for comprehensive Corporate Governance for a company client – 10% complete

4. Two corporate restructuring projects –

a. One 50% complete

b. One 20% complete

5. My own personal memoirs…

…it may seem a hefty pile of engagements, but it is the stuff that I thrive on… it is quite literally meat and drink to me, as they each help pay the bills… my biggest enemy is unstructured time... I like to be mentally active all the time… the exceptions to that are when I watch interludes of SKYNews, which is so bad it’s good, as I’ve said many times before now… and when I indulge watching my sporting passions… the English Premier League football and any form of cricket (the physical version of chess)… at present, featuring high on the rotation of these various writings is producing my own personal memoirs… having been involved in ghostwriting several life stories for other principals over the past couple of years, I realise that there will be moments of difficulty in getting out of my system much of the experiences which were my lot the past seven decades… no problem with the actual narrative, but more to do with the emotional road blocks that jump at me when least expected, causing temporary hold ups, with tightening lumps in the throat, and sometimes it seems, some sand getting into my eye from time to time… however, I am resolved, that if I am to retain my own integrity in telling my story, I have to face these passages as if I am writing as a third party, and just get them out… wish me luck… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!
