…some of yeez are aware by now that back in my youth, 150 years or so ago, I lived and worked for six years in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull… one of the greatest joys of that sojourn was being taught to speak and sing in Gaelic, the tongue of the Gods… providence was kind and allowed me to compete in the local and National Gaelic Mods with respectable success… during that time, I was privileged to meet and share platform stages with some of the finest exponents of the Celtic musical idiom, but none more magnificent than the legendary Lewisman, Calum Kennedy… people who have never been exposed to the magic of Celtic music may never understand the surge of electricity that runs through yer veins when yeez listen to sumb’dy with such a golden voice as Calum’s… today, on Facebook, a friend from Mull, Anda Campbell, posted a piece from the past with Calum singing in English, a much loved song, Dark Lochnagar… listen to it here, and yeez’ll capture the Celtic feel even in the English WURDS... but the real enchantment is the way the former Mod Gold medallist hits, stays with, and plays with the high register notes…
…of course, my own favourite for personal reasons is his rendition of Mo Mhathair (My Mother), which is the song which yielded Master Gallacher his own first-ever Mod medal over 50 years ago… here’s Calum’s unbeatable version…
…thanks for bringing back the mem’ries, Anda… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!

Oh, wow, I used to tune into the Calum Kennedy show when I was a peedie bairn, and I kept the vinyl we had of the whole family singing. Nice one, Seumas. 🙂
