2015 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 26,000 times in 2015. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 10 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

…Authors… Eureka!… this ol’ Jurassic Scots scribbler may just have unraveled the Goodreads mystery…

good

…given my propensity to f*ck up completely anything I touch that’s remotely associated with compooootery Web things, I’m delighted to announce a major personal breakthrough… relative in its impact, possibly, to the discovery of the Higgs Boson Particle… or the invention of the non-square wheel… even the revelation that Master Gallacher and Brad Pitt are never ever seen in the same room (just sayin’)… since my embroilment in the merry-go-round of Authorship, and all its attendant SOSYAL NETWURKS involvement, one of the many (nay, very many) channels to defy my comprehension has been the Goodreads page… and more  particularly, how a quill-scraper can best utilise membership of that mystical group… in much the same accidental manner that Mr Archimedes found a better use for his soapy bath water than merely cleaning himself, I believe I have stumbled upon the Goodreads enigmatic code… it has meant rubbing against my genetic Scots DNA that boasts frugality, with sparse room for charitable acts, by giving away free several signed copies of a coupla titles in the Jack Calder crime thriller series, THE VIOLIN MAN’S LEGACY and VENGEANCE WEARS BLACK… in the past five weeks the Goodreads Giveaway mechanism has hummed along merrily, trumpeting to the WURLD, the madness of a Scotsman in releasing some of his valuable product at no cost… but here’s the thing, Lads and Lassies of Blog Land… the insanity has some practicality attached… the draw entries closed today… and to my bewildered astonishment, just shy of 3,000 (yes, Mabel, 3,000!) entries were received… to be precise, 1,510 requests for THE VIOLIN MAN’S LEGACY and 1,436 requests for VENGEANCE WEARS BLACK… the winners have been drawn and will have their signed copies in due course, courtesy of the Bahrain Postal Service… total cost of the promotion to me?… merely the price of postage stamps and packaging to 7 readers in the UK, 10 in ‘Merika, and 3 in Canada… and I’m left with that beautiful after-feeling that must have attended Al Gore when he invented the WURLD-Wide-Web… a-hem… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!

…the best goal celebration I ever saw…

goal

…some of yeez with good mem’ries may recall my sharing on here, that as a much, much, younger version of me, I used to play a decent level of football… I continued playing when I went to Engu-uland’s capital city on the pretext of  continuing my trade as a Trainee Master of the Financial Universe… in reality I was masquerading as a missionary to the populace in Laaahdaan, innit… every Christmas, selected members of our football club participated in a very special charity game… our XI versus a select team from the Blind League… it was my first ever occasion to see up close and personal, how these partially-sighted, and some totally without vision players graced the field of play… two or three fully-sighted players on their side guided the others during the game… it was quite humbling to watch their team come on the pitch in single file, with each player with a hand on the shoulder of the guy in front of him… the surprising range of ages was amazing… I recall at least a coupla guys over the age of fifty… but the player who made it all so memorable for me was a kid barely nine years old… he was partly-sighted, and as enthusiastic about his football as anyone I’ve known… he ran around chasing every call, and every ball fed toward him by his team members… what he lacked in eyesight was more than compensated by the sheer guts of the lad, wanting to be involved all over the pitch… of course, physical tackling was out of the question, leaving space for these guys to demonstrate their football control and dribbling skills… uncanny balance, and not at walking speed… inevitably, our defence from time to time would ‘open up the gate’ to allow shots at goal… however, on one specific occasion, the wee lad advanced on them with great intent, and from about ten yards out, our defenders began to part to let him through for a shot… instead of running on to shoot, he stopped in his tracks with his foot on the ball, flipped it up, and with a bicycle kick that would have made Pele proud, sent the ball screaming into the top corner… truly unstoppable…

SoccerGoal300

…after a pause of astonishment, everybody, and I mean everybody, on both sides went nuts in celebration… the look on the kid’s face was priceless, and I remember it still with unbridled delight… so yeez can argue all day long about the best goal yeez’ve ever seen, be it Ronaldo, Pele, Beckham, Maradona or whoever… that boy’s goal was sum’thing truly special… and the best goal celebration I ever saw!… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!

…what’s in yer name?… what’s in yer genes?…

…this morning on Facebook, sumb’dy asked me if I have a touch o’ the Irish in me, given my occasional posting on there of Irish ballads and Celtic airs… and in that peculiar way yer thoughts bounce around in what’s left of the wee grey cells, a few (p’raps nebulous) connections began to form… my passport name is JAMES ANTHONY GALLACHER… so how, and where the hell does the ’SEUMAS’ derive, yeez may ask?… let’s back track a tad… it seems my great grandfather on my Dad’s side was JAMES MICHAEL GALLACHER, his son, my grandfather, was JAMES ANTHONY GALLACHER, my father’s name was JAMES MICHAEL GALLACHER, and in the family’s highly-original leapfrogging name-labelling sequence, I became the next JAMES ANTHONY GALLACHER… a bit of genealogical tracing back to the great grandwhatevers does indeed go back to Irish roots… (GALLAGHER and GALLAHER are more recognisably Irish surnames)… it seems that great grandfather was a celebrated Irish auctioneer… a great granduncle was an equally celebrated Irish lawyer… then the remaining family obviously swam across the Irish sea to Scotland in search of better fistfights, I should imagine… (the famous phrase at Irish weddings, ‘what time’s the fight?’)… then comes my metamorphosis from ‘JAMES’ to ‘SEUMAS’… frequent followers of my blog will know I spent six wonderful years in the Scottish Hebridean Island of Mull in the Western Isles…

aaaa

…I arrived there as a callow youth of barely 16 years… began singing in their local Gaelic and winning medals in the tongue… presto, hey… the Gaelic translation for ‘JAMES’ became my adopted moniker, and it’s stuck ever since… the immersion in the Celtic  language and particularly  its music has been part of my soul ever since… in the genes already? I suppose it was, and grateful I am to have been given the opportunity to embrace it so wholeheartedly in my teens… there’s a wee bit of that Celtic music from Enya for yeez above… do any of yeez out there, Lads and Lassies of Blog Land, have similar anecdotes to share?… what’s in yer name?… what’s in yer genes?… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!

…a wee updated blast from a year ago past…

…as relevant this week as it was a year ago…

pen

…hiding yer light under a bushel is okay if yeez are into deflected interior decorating illumination… but for quill-scrapers, that serves little or no purpose… make no mistake, I am fervently anti-spamming… however, it behoves every scribbler showing any of their wee masterpieces out there in the public domain, gently, gently, to let the WURLD know of their presence… faint heart in promotion never won fair downloads… it seems that the onset of the Christmas Season has tempted loadsa trumpeting of books on the internet with the Great God Amazon bulging with literary goodies… I have no objection to any of that, but my thoughts are that p’raps an overcrowded marketplace is hardly the best venue to attempt to get yer sales figures up… my preferred methodology, Mabel, is merely to continue to mention my stuff periodically … as per usual… NUTHIN out of the norm… business as, etc… with past Noel book-flogging opportunities, this ol’ Jurassic has noticed no appreciable deviation in the off-take… neither spiking nor troughing… indeed for the past month, I’m gratified to record a regular modest daily sales charting… as with anything, a lotta little makes a lot… same with book sales… of course, if Mister Claus and his elves suddenly conjured up a tsunami of buyers for my WURK, I wouldn’t turn my Scottish snout up at it… but realistically, let me continue to see the pace as it currently is and I shall be a happy chappie… I’m never averse to allowing my covers to speak for me on these blogs, with the requisite buying links, and these are dutifully listed below… purchase if yeez please… or not, equally if yeez so please… I’ll still LUV YEEZ!… in the event that the Internet gets taken out by North Korea over the remnants of this festive-tide, let me wish all of yeez in advance, of whatever denomination or creed,  a safe and healthy end of year, a Happy Christmas to those who celebrate it, and a prosperous 2016… and to all my Author buddies … go sell gazillions!… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!
