…Authors… fall in LUV with yer editing… it’s a lifelong affair…

…we’re at the cover art production stage for KILLER CITY… meantime, the banner marketing look like this… like it?…

…this ol’ Jurassic has just come up for air after being in my bunker with my laptop for the last week or so… the project for the week was quite simple… EDITINGediting… most of yeez Lads and Lassies of Blog Land will understand what it’s like … yeez type ‘the end’ on yer masterpiece… and that’s a signal for great rejoicing in itself… but attendant with that euphoria comes the recognition that it’s only the beginning of the end play… right from the start of this Magic Mystery Writing Gig Tour, I’ve tried to embrace the editing requirement in a positive manner… I know many of yeez tell me yeez detest, hate and abhor it (why don’t yeez come straight out and say what yeez really think about it!)… I think the adoption of editing as a tremendous part of yer WURK is like moving up through the various coloured belts in judo… the further yeez go, the better yer skills… oh, to be a Black Belt in editing… yes, it’s that important… as I’ve gotten more and more immersed in producing my wee Jack Calder crime thriller masterpieces, the deeper has become the appreciation of the benefit of taking the time to get this bit right… I look on the small victories, page by page, as compiling a tremendous overall battle victory… expunging the sentence-starting gerunds (‘-ing’ WURDS, Mabel)… excising the ubiquitous adverbs… catching the ‘weasel WURDS’ and exterminating them… developing an instinctive mental Thesaurus to give the literary body swerve to ad nauseum recurrence of ‘pet’ phrases, clichés, and even single WURDS that want to cling onto yer tomes like limpets… the re-reads to capture plot holes, narrative flows, character development… all stuff that was as hieroglyphics to me seven years ago…  and here’s the thing, regardless of how often yeez go over the stuff yerselves, a professional editor will still add value, even if it’s to tell yeez yer novel’s okay to go… (thanks to the fabulous Maureen Vincent-Northam)… but, the week and a half was time well-invested… I’ve done my best, and that’s all we can ever aspire to… KILLER CITY is due for launch via Crooked Cat Publishing sum’time in August… yeez later… LUV YEEZ!

  1. Every once in awhile, it’s important to give your inner editor a hug and a cookie for all the hard work… Excellent post, Sir!
