Here you go, Seumas! Thank you for hosting…means so much to me! Let me know if the links don’t work or if you need something else from me! Remember, your day is June 17th! You rock!
I’m the kind of writer that believes that there really are no rules in writing. You can’t tell a painter what vision he holds inside, he just paints it. It’s the same with writing books. Some are written in a way that appeal to more people than others, but there just shouldn’t be rules that dictate another person’s art.
I was about halfway through my first novel, Noble Courage, when I watched The Fellowship of the Ring. Tolkien greatly impressed upon me that you can pull everything out of your imagination, starting with a completely blank canvas, and build an empire! And so I stopped holding myself back. I didn’t care if something felt far-fetched or taboo. I told my story.
Along the way, I introduce many characters of varying ethical patterns. One of these characters is my take on the medieval vampire. What was this man that legends and myths have been spun around?
Dracul was born from everything dark within me, I think. Tapping into that side of myself made it easier to know him. No, I don’t kill people and drink their blood for fun or anything else. But there is definitely something to be said about creating such a sinister character by pouring all your anger and negative energy into one evil being. It was actually quite liberating and therapeutic!
Duke Gallant, on the other hand, was a breath of fresh air. Where other nobles along my journey have been stuffy and harsh, Gallant is a very neutral character with a clear set of his own values. He’s both majestic and very “down to earth”. He was my happy place many times amidst the darkness of Dracul. I suppose the both of them balance me out.
Tears of Penance, Book Three of The Aspen Series, is my favorite book of the series. It represents that change is possible and that even when we feel overcome with darkness, there is always some light to counter it. This book makes me believe in good triumphing over evil (I know it sounds cliche, but it’s true!) and that you have to fight for what matters.
So is this a book you can just pick up and read even though it is right in the middle of the series? My answer is yes, I feel that the drama leading up to this book is fun and takes you on an amazing adventure, but I do feel that you would still enjoy this book regardless.
