…yer persona as a Writer, Blogger or Person is as people perceive yeez… be careful with that perception…

…if it looks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, and walks like a duck, the chances are it’s a duck… despite whatever grandiose notions this ol’ Jurassic may harbour about my real or imagined talents, the WURLD may well have another opinion… my famed countryman, the poet, Robert Burns, a coupla centuries ago, wrote,

‘O wad some Pow’r the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!’

…it’s a view often missed… the mirror is not sufficient, as that simply reflects the facial image… the character, the humanity (or lack of it), the ability to interact positively (or otherwise) with yer fellows, takes a different assessment… which brings me to the point of the blog today… as quill-scrapers and inhabitants of the internet’s SOSYAL NETWURKS, it’s vital to remember the legendary quotation from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, ‘The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit, Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it’

…yer writing, yer blogging, yer sharings on the internet channels, are there for the reading universe to see… I have thousands of connections across the SOSYAL MEDYA, a good many of whom I communicate with regularly, and for each, I’ve formed a mental picture of a person… some more friendly than others, some idiosyncrasies appearing as the constant exchanges take place… make no mistake about it, virtual relationships carry perceptions of yerselves to others… how yeez react to issues, how yeez ‘carry’ yerselves… as in the so-called ‘real’ face-to-face daily living, it’s okay to agree to disagree about stuff, what’s important is the manner in which that agreement to disagree happens… I see tons of material verging on the abusive, the crass, the sexist, the troll-ish,.. the senders of which get no further ’clicks’ from me… on the plus side, I’m blessed with thousands of solid friendships, supporters, and wouldn’t give them up for many of the ‘real-WURLD’ linkages that cross my path… yeez know who yeez are… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!

  1. A timely reminder on the quintessential requirement for good manners be they in person or written. Thank you Seamus.
Now if my manners were as polished as thine 😊 I would ask if I may address you so informally as to use your first name. Knowing I’m speaking to a gentleman, may I thus be assured my overture will be accepted?
The olde ways of speech and manners are a tad difficult these days yet sound soothing on the ears… would you agree, and cost nothing to offer to our cadre of “quill scrappers” as you call “us”. Yes, I know I’ve been sadly remiss of late. Late it is here in the land of Lemuria and so, agreeing with you whole heartedly, bid you a fond adieu and a wonderful night.
    Blessings, Susan 💖

    • …my dear lady, Susan… my first name is the much preferred mode of communication..’Mister Gallacher’ was my father’s name! … in an age of ever-depleting courtesies, it’s a pleasure to encounter a fellow practitioner of what seems to be a dying art of respect…mwaaah 🙂

      • It was a pleasure more memorable for its scarcity. Thank you seems so under rated for the pleasure I received. I shall henceforth be on the watch to sharpen the delightful art of courteous speech. 😊. Hapoy Days Seamus.

  2. You make great points about manners in social media. Some people to distance themselves from responsibility and kindness when they sit down in front of a computer. Another good read, Seumas. 😀

  5. So true. You don’t know who people are or what they have been through, there’s no non verbal communication and we all speak English in a slightly different way. Confusion abounds and we need to give each other a little slack.

    • …you’re right, mLady… I also treat with respect those folks who show all the courtesies and perhaps, for example, mis-spell words… realising that not everybody has been privileged to get the levels of education that some of us have… having lived most of my working career abroad, where English is very much a distant second language, the very act of trying to communicate shows positivity :):)

      • Absolutely, I am absolutely gobsmacked at how nasty people can be to one another on the internet and I think if people stopped for a few seconds of thought and imagination before launching an attack, a huge part of it would disappear.

  6. I think, Seumas, we should treat others, in-person or on social media, exactly the way we would like to be treated–or even better. That’s the ancient do-unto-others rule and it still works. 🙂
