…Author self-belief versus Author self-delusion… yeez choose it yerselves…

…humour, laughter, wit, comedy… all are indispensable tools for this ol’ Jurassic to retain wherever modicum of sanity may yet flicker around my wee grey cells… an infallible provider of all of these measures has been one of my idols for more than forty years, Billy Connolly

…yesterday, I was watching for the umpteenth time one of his interviews a few years ago with Michael ParkinsonBilly said sum’thing which resonated… he said that from his earliest years he knew he was going to be a successful comedian… his view is that it’s okay to know yerself that yeez are gonna make it good in whatever yeez choose to be or do… not in a blast-it-from-the-rooftops way of knowing… more of an innate confidence in yerself and yer abilities… the point of this?… I continue to read a lot about how many quill-scrapers have doubts in respect of their WURK… admittedly, this is an industry where the norm includes plenty of excuses for knockdowns… from Everests of rejection slips… to that one-out-of-fifty reviews being negative (oh, Gawd, the dagger piercing to the scribbler’s heart in that solo troll piece!)… and all that doesn’t even touch on the basic LUV-it-hate-it-LUV-it-hate-it-LUV-it cycle yeez apply to yer masterpieces in the toil of producing them… of course, the flip side is the churning out of any old garbage by wannabe Steinbecks and Rowlings-es who can’t tell a comma from a coma, or a paragraph from a parachute… self-knowledge is p’raps one of the most difficult attributes to acquire, whether be yeez a pensman or be yeez a lensman…

but, back to Master Connolly… his premise is solid… and it boils down to this… Author self-belief versus Author self-delusion… yeez choose it yerselves… I know which one I’m more comfortable with… roll on my millionth book sale!!… it’s here if yeez want! … see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!

  1. I understand perfectly, Seumas. I’ve always considered it a blessing to not be able to lie to myself. I’ve never been able to live in a “dream castle,” nor been handed things without working for them. As a child, maybe, but not as an adult. My confidence comes from being honest with myself, and willing to work hard. 🙂

  2. As a person who totally lacks confidence and loves Billy, I will read and re read this piece in the hope I can knock some confidence into me. I am more stubborn – the only quitters are losers type of person.

  3. Comedy… particularly from Billy… often offers the deepest truths if we can but see them. And though I have yet to wok out the spiritual message of this one, I never tire of it… followed by the next part of course 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIPYS4lww_0

  5. Sometimes reality stinks, but it’s still reality. I’ve always tried to see what’s real & ignore delusion. I don’t always succeed, but that’s what a long life is for.
