…this ol’ Jurassic has few enuff talents to crow about, so when I have sum’thing I do reasonably well, I’m not averse to telling yeez… in my youth I was a reasonable tenor, and competed with considerable success singing in Gaelic at the Scottish National Mod Festivals… the LUV of Celtic music has been a source of great pleasure over the years… and with typical Master Gallacher immodesty, I can still hold the correct keys when I warble… however, that voice talent for lyricism went wildly AWOL whenever I attempted (hundreds of times) to replicate it on musical instruments… a modest early skill with the school orchestra viola lasted only two or three years… over the past forty years, I have owned prob’ly upwards of a coupla dozen guitars, acoustic and electric…
…Gibsons, Fenders, you name it, some of the better brands… all of which I ultimately donated to people better skilled at using them than I… I took lessons… I tried to educate myself with chords, notes, riffs, bridges… net bottom line?.. it’s a good thing I didn’t give up the day job… few things would please me more than to be able to pick up a guitar and instantly strum along to any old tune, with correct chord sequences… doesn’t happen, Mabel… I owned mandolins, banjos… six-and twelve-string beauts of gee-tarrs… and always, after a period of trying to ‘get it’, surrendered to the realisation that p’raps I should stick to the singing…
…as I’ve shared on here before now, believe it or not, as a teenager in Glasgow, I was front-man singer/ harmonica player in a beat group (as we called them back then)… the other thing I’d dearly LUV to be proficient at is playing piano… I’m uber-envious of folks who just sit down at the ivories and, voila! blend in to whatever tune is going on around them… p’raps there’s still time to have another go… I WUNDER how tricky it is to play the tuba?…
…see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!…

Thank your lucky stars my music teacher gave up on me when I was seven. Told my parents I was not “musically inclined”. I think that means reading music escapes me and I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.

Seumas sharing his various musical talents and slipped up by revealing a secret vice as teenager as a front man/harmonica player in a beat group – I was banned from performing with long haired weirdos by my father- and so in the late 60’s I sang with a band under another name..didn’t last long the band went to pot! Do you have a secret past you would like to share? Its okay we won’t tell anybody……

You’re not alone, Big Man. Like you, I can sing but all attempts to play any stringed instrument are doomed to failure. I’ll match you cast-off guitar for cast-off guitar. I blame my large knockers, they push the instrument too far away for my short arms to reach…hah! Bet you can’t say that!

.. in similar vein , I s’pose, I avoided the double bass..;):)

I also would have liked to learn to play the piano, but my dad said there was no room for one in the house. My son played the drums and my daughter still plays the guitar for her standup performance. I could sing also and can still carry a tune, but it takes practice to keep in form. You could still probably learn to play the piano. I had a friend who learned when she was about 22. She taught Kindergarten and had to play simple tunes in the class. You’ve accomplished a lot else in your life though that others haven’t. You’re a math whiz with a great education and good job and have become a successful author. You have every right to celebrate your successes 🙂

… I just find that any UNSTRUCTURED time is my enemy, I s’pose,. m’Lady, Suzanne… I prefer to try to keep the wee grey cells active by getting into new ‘stuff ‘ if I can have any propensity for the new things… frankly, it’s how I got into writing 6 years ago..:):)

My singing talents are limited to when the hoover is working… or I’m in an enclosed car on the motorway… or on a mountain. Or once, in a public worksop…(why??). The music I only lived vicariously, playing percussion to my husban’ds talents in France. Fun years. 🙂

I could always have a word with the small gods if you fancy trying the triangle?

..yes indeed, that man..a quiet WURD in the shell likes of the Lesser Gods would always be helpful… but if I play the triangle is that like being involved in a ‘menage-a-trois’?… cheers, David:):):):)

When I tried learning to play ANY musical instruments, my teachers would quickly step in and rescue the poor tortured things from my grip. I think it was the anguished screeches, bellows, whistles and racing heart thuds that always gave the game away 😀
You’ll just have to settle for the exceedingly GREAT talents of writing stories, blog posts and marketing that you’ve been lumbered with Seumas 😀

I feel your pain, Seumas! I currently own 3 guitars (a Gibson Les Paul Gold Top being the flagship of my collection) and they serve more purpose as wall hangings than musical instruments. On the too-rare occassions when I take one down and torture it I am quickly reminded of why it hung in silence for so long!!
But I keep them in the eternal hope that I will wake up one morning as the second coming of Jimmy Page!!

I wanted to learn to play the violin so badly, and I’m proud to say I over achieved my goal. I played so badly I was banished to the barn until the cow stopped giving milk, then banished to the woods. Later I did learn to play the guitar, so all was not lost.

At least you have your “pipes” as an instrument! Whenever I try to sing anything my 15-year-old daughter gives me the “rolly-eyes.” I could play piano at one point, but I broke my pinky finger and now I can’t reach an octave on a piano to save my life. 🙂

…pity about your finger…coz making any kinda music can be a great soothing thing:) cheers , m’Lady 🙂

There must be a band for all those of us who can’t play anything. There’s a famous piece of music that requires a whole orchestra remain silent…

..I’d prob’ly sneeze in the middle when we’re supposed to be silent! 🙂
