…Reviews for Authors… yeez can hear we scribblers sing it, ‘You Are So Beautiful To Me’…

…most self-respecting quill-scrapers worth the label will admit it’s nice to have sales… yer bills have to be paid… yer candles for the virtually-lit garret have to be bought… that sneaky wee thing called ‘Life’ sum’times requires income… moolah… folding stuff… squiggles on the credit side of yer bank account… but lots of yeez Lads and Lassies of Blog Land also share with me, that right up there along with the LUVLY ‘Ka-Ching!’ of tills receiving coin on yer behalf is recognition… the belief that sumb’dy in the great big reading WURLD has actually taken time to peruse yer masterpieces… over time, if yeez are very lucky, some good folks will go that extra mile and pen a few lines or more to review yer books… it really matters not whether it garners a four- or five-star rating (although, of course, the more of these the better)… what is important is that other people may see the review and deign yer stuff worthy of a peek… the Great God Amazon in one of its less comprehensible quirks does not automatically cross-refer reviews pinned on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com, nor indeed to most of its other reader page markets… that reviewers see fit to carry their reviews to both of these pages is even more of an extra effort much appreciated by authors… also considered an excellent bonus is to have the review posted on the Goodreads reviews… all good stuff… nowhere is it more apt to quote, ‘a lot of little makes a lot’… my wee literary babies have been dancing around on Amazon variously between one and five years, as each successive novel in my Jack Calder crime thriller series peeled off the smoking laptop… (sum’times more like lethargic smouldering, truth be known)… yesterday, I took a little time to count up the various reviews, and was absolutely bluudy gobsmacked!… what I thought may be a few dozen, turns out to be over 200 reviews for the  assorted titles… and I can swiftly assure yeez these are not all done by my Granny and Auntie Mabel… I’m at once sincerely and seriously humbled and gratified with such reader generosity… in my own small way of part of my attempts at ‘paying back’, I do regularly leave reviews of the books on the respective Amazon and Goodreads review pages, mostly of fellow newbies, and great writer pals I’ve met on the Web… the clip below is a ‘thank yeez kindly’ to each and every person who honoured me with a review… see yeez later… LUV YEEZ!… oh, and here’s the family photo of the series:

  1. Every day i learn something new about “indie”… I had no idea that Amazon reviews didn’t cross over from one of their “shops” to the others. Wishing you a wonderful weekend, Seumas. Hugs!

    • ..hi, Teagan… yes, it must be a system linkup omission from Amazon’s side, as one would think it would make great cross-selling sense from their perspective… if I’m told that someone is doing a review for one of my books, I politely ask if they would be so kind as to put it on both the Amazon pages and Goodreads if they are present on there… I don’t go ‘review-chasin’ as such if a review just ‘appears’ on either site… have a great weekend, too, m’Lady 🙂

  2. YES! A sweet review on Amazon for one of our books is almost (I repeat, almost) as nice as the little e-mail that crops up and tells me I have a (admittedly, small) royalty payment in my bank account. Actually, to be honest, sometimes the review with a hit on the 4 or 5 star is BETTER than the payment. As Sally Field once said, “You like me, you really really like me!” Because we work alone often on that smoldering laptop, receiving praise and recognition can keep those writing fires burning.

  4. Most people, including authors, don’t realise that if you have an Amazon user name and password, you can use them to sign into ANY Amazon online store ANYWHERE in the world Seumas.
That’s how my reviews appear in UK, USA, Canada, Australia and occasionally Spain, Mexico and India 😀
PS. If you want to buy a book from anywhere outside your Amazon designated area you can’t, even if you give them your credit card details and its an eBook you want to buy!
PPS. If you want to gift an eBook to someone outside your Amazon designated area, they may or may not be allowed to claim it (don’t ask why it’s so, don’t know)

  5. I did e-mail Amazon about this matter a while back when a Mexican author found out that when the Mexican Amazon appeared her books had zero reviews although she had quite a few in .com and .es and they told me they were looking into it, but that was months ago (for what I understood it seems that management in each one of the stores might be different so not sure how they would coordinate). Although at least in .uk the .com appear too, so it’s not so necessary to do both (but if you’ve bought in uk and write the review directly in .com it won’t appear that you have purchased it, as that does not cross over either). When I read books from Spanish authors I try and post them in .es too…

    • …Amazon certainly doesn’t go out of its way to be easy to operate with in certain of its activities… sadly, the books distribution is one of the areas where the operational failings become obvious …:(

  6. When I checked about gifting books some while back it said it was only if you and the person were in the US so…
